How Many Kids Should You Invite to a Birthday Party?
A simple guide by age, the whole-class question, and why a bigger party (or a bigger game truck) isn't always a better one.
The party crewHow many kids to invite, by age
The easiest starting point is the age plus one rule: invite one more child than your kid's age. It works best up to about age 6. After that, most kids want their class or friend group, and 8 to 15 guests is the range that works for most parties.
| Age | Suggested guests | Why it works | Adults to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Family plus 3 to 5 little friends | Short attention spans and nap schedules. Keep it small and early. | Most parents stay |
| 3 to 5 | 4 to 8 kids (age plus one is a good start) | Small groups mean fewer meltdowns and easier games. | Most parents stay |
| 6 to 8 | 8 to 15 kids | Peak whole-class years. Kids love group games and a bit of competition. | 2 or 3 adult helpers |
| 9 to 12 | 10 to 15 kids | Friend groups get tighter. Teams, tournaments and gaming really shine. | 1 or 2 helpers; many parents drop off |
| 13 and up | 5 to 10 close friends | Teens prefer a smaller, social group they actually chose. | One adult nearby |
These are rules of thumb, not rules. Your space, budget and your child's personality matter more.

Pick your child's age and the kind of party. We'll suggest a guest count, helpers and how much pizza to order.
Should you invite the whole class?
You don't have to. But if invitations go out at school, many schools ask that the whole class (or all the boys or all the girls) is invited, so nobody feels left out. Check with your child's teacher first.
- Know the numbers. In Ontario, Grades 1 to 3 classes are capped at 20 students, and kindergarten classes can have up to about 30, so a whole-class party is a big party.
- Keep it small privately. Inviting 8 close friends? Send invites by text or email, not in backpacks.
- Pick a format that scales. For 20+ kids you need an activity that keeps everyone busy, with an adult or host running it.
- Plan for siblings. Decide early whether brothers and sisters are welcome, and say so on the invite.
Is a bigger game truck better for a bigger party?
Not necessarily. Some game trucks fit more players than ours, but more seats don't make a better party on their own. What matters is that every kid gets real turns, the games suit their age, and someone is running the room. For most birthdays, 10 to 15 kids with a dedicated Game Coach is the sweet spot.
Playing beats waiting
Up to 15 kids play at the same time in our trailer. With a bigger guest list, short rotations and team rounds keep turns fair instead of leaving kids standing around.
Parking your street can handle
Our pickup truck and trailer fit in about 3 to 4 car lengths. Some larger game trucks and buses need 6 or more spots, which can be hard on a busy GTA street.
A group one person can run
One Game Coach can keep a group of kids organized, fair and having fun. The bigger the crowd in one space, the harder that gets for anyone.
How much parking does a game truck need?
The Gamers Getaway truck and trailer need about 3 to 4 car lengths on your street or driveway. We don't lower a rear ramp during the party, so you don't need extra space behind the trailer, and there's usually still room for guests to park.

How a Game Coach runs the flow of a party
A guest list only works if the party has a rhythm. Here's what that looks like at a Gamers Getaway party.
- 1Before guests arrive
Set up early
Your Game Coach arrives ahead of the start time, parks, and has the trailer cooled or heated with games ready, usually within 20 to 30 minutes.
- 2First few minutes
Get everyone seated and playing
Kids come straight in and grab a controller. The coach picks games that suit the age group, from simple and silly for younger kids to competitive for older ones.
- 3The middle
Teams, turns and tournaments
The coach switches between free play, team games and quick tournaments so the energy stays up and every kid gets a turn in the spotlight.
- 4Bigger groups
Short, fair rotations
With more than 15 guests, kids rotate in short rounds so nobody waits long.
- 5The end
Wrap up and pack up
A final round to finish strong, then the coach packs everything up and leaves nothing behind. No cleanup for you.

Guest list checklist
- Set an RSVP date about a week before the party.
- Expect a few no-shows, especially on long weekends and around holidays.
- Ask about allergies on the invite so food is easy to plan.
- Decide on siblings and say so clearly.
- Share your final headcount with your host or Game Coach a few days ahead.
- Save the parking: keep 3 to 4 car lengths clear in front of your home for the truck.
Birthday guest list questions
How many kids should I invite to a birthday party?
A simple rule: for kids under 6, invite about their age plus one (a 5-year-old invites around 6 friends). For school-age kids, 8 to 15 guests works well for most parties. Teens usually prefer 5 to 10 close friends. Then adjust for your space, budget and how many adults can help.
What is the age plus one rule for birthday parties?
The age plus one rule says to invite one more child than your kid's age, so a 4-year-old has about 5 guests. It works best for toddlers and preschoolers, when small groups keep things calm. From about age 6, most parents move to a class or friend-group size instead.
Should I invite the whole class to my child's birthday party?
You don't have to, but if invitations go out at school, many schools ask that everyone in the class (or all the boys or all the girls) gets one, so nobody feels left out. In Ontario, Grades 1 to 3 classes are capped at 20 students, so a whole-class party usually means about 20 kids. If you'd rather keep it small, send invitations privately by text or email.
Is it rude not to invite the whole class?
No. A smaller party of close friends is completely normal. The polite part is how you invite: send invitations privately rather than handing them out in class, and ask your child not to talk about the party at school.
How many kids can play in a video game truck?
It depends on the truck. In the Gamers Getaway trailer, up to 15 kids play at the same time across multiple screens on PlayStation 5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and VR. For bigger guest lists, your Game Coach runs short rotations and team games so everyone gets fair turns.
Is a bigger game truck better for a big birthday party?
Not necessarily. More seats don't help if kids are waiting, wandering or squabbling over controllers. What makes a party work is a sensible group size, games picked for the age group and someone running turns fairly. A larger vehicle also needs a lot more parking on your street.
How much parking does a game truck need?
The Gamers Getaway truck and trailer need about 3 to 4 car lengths of space on your street or driveway (with permission to block your own driveway). We don't lower a rear ramp during the party, so there's no extra space needed behind the trailer. Some larger game trucks and buses need 6 or more parking spots.
How many adults should be at a kids birthday party?
For toddlers and preschoolers, most parents stay. For ages 6 to 8, plan on 2 or 3 adult helpers besides you, about one for every 5 or 6 kids. For tweens, 1 or 2 is usually plenty. With a game truck, the Game Coach runs the gaming, but you'll still want an adult handling food, cake and washroom trips.
How many pizzas do I need for a kids birthday party?
Plan on about 2 to 3 slices per child (closer to 1 or 2 for preschoolers). A large pizza usually has 8 slices, so 12 kids eat about 4 large pizzas. Add one or two for the adults.
What if more kids show up than we planned for?
It happens, especially with siblings. Tell your host or Game Coach as early as you can. In our trailer, groups over 15 simply rotate, with short rounds so nobody waits long.
